CMO TLDR: Omnicom, Walmart, And The Agentic Buying Breakout

The AI Ad Economy

Omnicom Built Its AI Future, Then Outsourced The Builders

Omnicom quietly moved at least 468 engineers and product staffers across the US, the UK, India and Malaysia onto the books of IT contractor Endava during June and July, according to documentation obtained by ADWEEK. Those are the teams that built Omni, the platform the holding company has sold as the keystone of its client offering since showing off the overhauled version at CES in January, and a separate action cut roughly 50 US employees from the Omni Platforms Product and Engineering Division on June 9. Why it matters: proprietary technology is the argument holdcos use to justify their fees against consultancies and platforms, and a keystone product maintained by an outside vendor invites every CMO in the roster to ask what exactly they are paying Omnicom to own.

Agentic Buying Cuts Out The Middleman, And 42% Of The CPM
Butler/Till and iHeartMedia ran a four week campaign in July and August in which paired AI agents, one built by the agency and one by the publisher, met over an MCP server to activate just under $10,000 of streaming audio and podcast inventory for an undisclosed agriculture client. CPMs landed 42% below the client's own direct buying benchmark, and 48% of podcast impressions delivered into premium mid roll placements against the 33% projected in the traditional plan. Why it matters: this was a straight agency to publisher transaction with no SSP in the middle, so the experiment prices intermediary margin rather than just testing automation; iHeart opens broadcast radio to agentic buying later this year and puts Audiograph on Amazon's DSP from mid September, though with only about a third of digital audio trading programmatically the volume story is still years out.

Marketing Mix Modeling Goes Open Source, And Agentic
Open source MMM packages including Meta's Robyn, Google's Meridian and PyMC have gone mainstream as GDPR, COPPA and Apple's deprecation of the IDFA made attribution unreliable, and agentic AI has now collapsed the skill barrier to running them. “Even if you have very little modeling background, it's almost from zero to one,” Northwestern marketing professor Julian Runge told AdExchanger, while warning that an unsupervised model will hand you confident nonsense. Why it matters: measurement dollars that used to flow to specialist consultancies and data science hires can now buy free code and an agent, but the savings vanish the moment a CMO reallocates budget on the back of a model nobody in the building can vet.

Deals And Earnings

LiveRamp Investors Bless The Publicis Deal, Balk At The Payout
LiveRamp shareholders approved the $2.2 billion sale to Publicis Groupe on Monday, with 92% of represented shares in favor and less than 1% opposed, clearing a key threshold on the way to closing. In the same vote they rejected the $82.6 million golden parachute package for executives, a rebuke that carries no power to actually stop the payouts. Why it matters: the deal converts a supposedly neutral data collaboration layer into a wholly owned subsidiary of one holding company, and rivals are already voting with their integrations; Omnicom has started transitioning away from LiveRamp while Havas says it will keep the platform open to clients.

Walmart's Ad Business Is Now The Margin Story
Walmart raised full year guidance after second quarter global ad revenue jumped 38%, with US growth at Walmart Connect running at 43% excluding Vizio, on total revenue of $187.9 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.81 per share against a Wall Street estimate of $0.74. CFO John David Rainey said the spike gives the retailer “confidence and the ability to maybe see incremental margins even go higher,” because advertising is now outpacing ecommerce growth by a wide margin on a much larger base. Why it matters: with the $1.4 billion Vibe.co acquisition folding into Walmart Connect alongside Vizio, Walmart is bolting commerce data, measurement and CTV into a single stack aimed at Amazon, whose ads business booked $76 billion over the last 12 months.

How Programmatic Home Screen Ads Are Becoming More Standardized (And More Accessible)
Nexxen has launched standardization tools that let advertisers upload creative once to a universal spec and run home screen placements across multiple TV manufacturers, with AI assisted resizing cutting onboarding time for new OEM partners by as much as 50%. Viewers spend an average of 10.5 minutes deciding what to watch, per Nielsen, and the inventory is now pulling in performance buyers rather than just entertainment brands; Brainlabs' head of programmatic says standardization makes it “a lot cheaper to operationally stand something like this up at scale.”

How Unilever detergent brand Persil measures sports sponsorship impact
Unilever's Dirt Is Good stable, which houses Persil, Omo and Skip, debuts its F1 Academy car livery at the Dutch Grand Prix this week, extending a sponsorship push that already includes Arsenal, where awareness of the partnership has climbed from 11% to 16% since 2023. Global vp Giovanna Bressane Gomes says exposure is not the test; brand lift, equity studies, penetration and market share are, a standard worth borrowing before renewing any front of shirt deal running £35 million to £60 million a season.
